1. General information

The subject  Scientific English II for Nursing is part of the teaching framework of English for Specific Purposes, whose contents are focused on the nursing profession. Both in theory and practical classes, the four skills are worked on so that the student can communicate in written and oral form. The subject is taught in English and is based on the equivalent level of requirement B1.

These approaches and objectives are aligned with the following Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations Agenda 2030 (http.//www.un.org/sutanabledevelopment/es/), in such a way that the acquisition of the learning results of the subject provides training and competence to contribute to some extent to their achievement. Goal 3: Health and Wellness; Goal 4: Quality Education.

2. Learning results

Know the characteristics of scientific English.

Use English in nursing through the discursive, rhetorical and linguistic functions of the scientific register.

Possess the general reading comprehension skills to understand and interpret texts in their field.

Write any type of paragraphs, which respond to different needs and which are used in the professional communication of the discipline

Learn to plan and prepare an oral presentation with some fluency.

Know the vocabulary specific to nursing in English and be able to develop their own glossary.

Manage their learning and know the tools that can help them.

Theoretical Teaching

a. Talking about nursing

0- The human body

1-The Hospital Team: Allied Health Professions. The nursing Profession.

2. In and around the hospital: Introduction to a hospital/ Outpatients/ Inpatients. Hospital Departments Giving directions.

2. Hospital Admission: The admission procedure. Patient record. Patient summary.

3. Accidents and Emergencies: First aid. The symptoms of shock. How to deal with an emergency.

4. Types of pain: Describing degrees of pain. Asking about pain (Hurt, Ache, Pain, Sore).

5. Describing symptoms. Asking about symptoms. Symptoms and Signs

b-Anatomy and Physiology: Body Systems, Defining Anatomy and Physiology, The Building Blocks of the Body. The locomotor system: The Skeleton, How bone is organized, Bone Accessory Structures: cartilage, ligaments, tendons and joints.

c-Rhetorical Functions: Writing Descriptions: shapes and properties/physical features. Function and organization. Describing a Process. Expressing Location

Expressing Structure. Writing Definitions. Expressing Cause and Consequence. Writing a Set of Instructions

d-Terminology: The Components of Medical Words. Understanding Medical Words. General terms vs Colloquial terms. Acronyms and Abbreviations. Irregular scientific plurals.

e-Listening Comprehension: Understanding videos: taking notes, following instructions. Understanding lectures: Summarizing. Understanding short talks: Answering true-false questions/Filling in the gaps/finding synonyms, etc. Attending lectures in English-speaking universities online. Making use of Open courseware resources

 

Practical Sessions: Parkinson's disease. Children and Nursing. Optimism is good for health. Caring for the Elderly

4. Academic activities

Participative master class: sessions with the teacher in which the subject will be explained (47 hours) Practical: sessions to solve exercises and practical tasks set by the teacher (12 hours) Study and personal work (84 hours)

Assessment tests (6 hours)

5. Assessment system

CONTINUOUS EVALUATION SYSTEM: It is necessary that the student participates regularly in the activities that will be proposed in the classroom: resolution of exercises, participation in debates, self-evaluation activities, etc. Oral expression test: Students will work on a nursing-related topic in small groups . Originality and the approach used will be valued. Communicative ability, organization, clarity and coherence, morphosyntactic, lexical, orthographic and stylistic adequacy will be taken into account.

This test accounts for 20% of the final grade.

Practices The students will work on different topics that will be proposed to them, on which they will have to give their opinion, search for information, carry out activities, comment with other classmates, etc.

This section represents 20% of the final grade.

Final exam: In this test they must demonstrate the knowledge acquired during the term: comprehension skills and writing in English, knowledge of specific vocabulary, definition and use of terminology specific to occupational therapy, writing texts specific to their area, translation of texts in their specialty, oral comprehension.

This test represents 60% of the final grade and must be passed in order to average with the rest of the grades.

 

GLOBAL ASSESSMENT

Based exclusively on the final global test in which they will have to demonstrate the knowledge related to all the content worked throughout the term.

1. Información básica de la asignatura

La asignatura de Inglés Científico II para enfermería se encuadra en el marco de enseñanza de Inglés para Fines Específicos, cuyos contenidos se enfocan a la profesión de enfermera/o. Tanto en las clases de teoría como de prácticas se trabajan las cuatro destrezas con el objetivo de que el alumno/a pueda comunicarse de forma escrita y oral. La asignatura se imparte en inglés y se parte del nivel de exigencia equivalente B1.
Estos planteamientos y objetivos están alineados con los siguientes Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible (ODS) de la Agenda 2030 de las Naciones Unidas (http.//www.un.org/sutanabledevelopment/es/), de tal manera que la adquisición de los resultados de aprendizaje de la asignatura proporciona capacitación y competencia para contribuir en cierta medida a su logro. Objetivo 3: Salud y bienestar; Objetivo 4: Educación de calidad.

2. Resultados de aprendizaje

Conoce las características del inglés científico.
Utiliza el inglés en el área de la enfermería a través de las funciones discursivas, retóricas y lingüísticas del registro científico.
Posee las habilidades de comprensión general de lectura para entender e interpretar textos de su área.
Escribe cualquier tipo de párrafos, que responden a necesidades diferentes y que se usan en la comunicación profesional de la disciplina.
Ha aprendido a planificar y preparar una presentación oral con cierta fluidez.
Conoce el vocabulario específico propio de la enfermería en inglés y es capaz de elaborar su propio glosario.
Es capaz de gestionar su aprendizaje y conoce las herramientas que le pueden ayudar.

4. Actividades académicas

Clase magistral participativa: sesiones con la profesora en las que se explicará el temario de la asignatura (47 horas)
Prácticas: sesiones de resolución de ejercicios y tareas de tipo práctico planteados por la profesora (12 horas)
Estudio y trabajo personal (84 horas)
Pruebas de evaluación (6 horas)

5. Sistema de evaluación

SISTEMA DE EVALUACIÓN CONTINUA: Es necesario que el/la estudiante participe de manera habitual en las actividades que se propondrán en el aula: resolución de ejercicios, intervención en debates, actividades de autoevaluación, etc

Prueba de expresión oral: Los alumnos/as harán un trabajo sobre un tema relacionado con la enfermería en pequeños grupos. Se valorará la originalidad y el enfoque empleado. Se tendrá en cuenta la capacidad comunicativa, organización, claridad y coherencia, adecuación morfosintáctica, léxica, ortográfica y estilística.
Esta prueba supone un 20% de la nota final.

Prácticas: Los alumnos/as trabajarán diversos temas que se les irán proponiendo, sobre los cuales tendrán que dar su opinión, buscar información, realizar actividades, comentar con otros compañeros, etc.
Este apartado supone un 20% de la nota final.

Examen final: En esta prueba deberán demostrar los conocimientos adquiridos durante el curso: capacidad de comprensión y escritura en inglés, conocimiento de vocabulario específico, definición y uso de terminología propia de la terapia ocupacional, redacción de textos propios de su área, traducción de textos de su especialidad, comprensión oral.
Esta prueba supone un 60% de la nota final y debe aprobarse para hacer la media con el resto de calificaciones.


EVALUACIÓN GLOBAL
Basada exclusivamente en la prueba global final en la que deberán demostrar los conocimientos relacionados con todo el contenido trabajado a lo largo del curso.
